Native American Birth Totem

This "Medicine Wheel" birth-totem calendar assigns each moon of the year a guiding animal and an elemental clan, read for instincts, gifts and temperament.

About this system. The twelve-moon birth-totem wheel is a modern invention — it was popularised by Sun Bear's The Medicine Wheel: Earth Astrology (1980) and related New Age writing, and it is not the astronomy, calendar or ceremony of any actual Native American nation. Hundreds of distinct peoples hold hundreds of distinct traditions, most of which are not public and none of which map onto a twelve-sign zodiac. Enjoy this as folklore, not as anyone's heritage.

How to use the Native American Totem

A birth-totem system drawn from the Medicine Wheel of several Native traditions (popularised by Sun Bear). Each part of the year has a guiding animal totem and an elemental clan.

Getting started

  1. Enter your birth date.
  2. You receive your animal totem and its clan (Thunderbird/Fire, Frog/Water, Turtle/Earth or Butterfly/Air).

Reading your result

Your totem describes your instincts and gifts; the clan adds an elemental temperament. Treat it as respectful folk symbolism rather than astronomy.
